The didactic curriculum in oral and maxillofacial surgery focuses on surgical application of the basic biomedical sciences. The lecture series in oral and maxillofacial surgery occurs as part of the dental Specialties course. The students are expected to keep detailed record in a logbook of cases treated or assisted, under local and observed under general anaesthesia.
An introduction to the basic principles of the discipline including techniques of administration of local anesthesia, basic exodontias armamentarium and technique, fundamental surgical principles including asepsis, wound healing and hemostasis, complex exodontias, management of dentoalveolar infections, management of soft tissue and dentoalveolar injuries, prevention and management of surgical complications are all addressed in a multidisciplinary case-based format.
The department is one of the finest departments in the region for education in the speciality and patient care. Curriculum specified by the Dental Council of India is followed. For undergraduate students regular theory classes are arranged via integrated teaching, blackboard teaching and ICT. For the clinical exposure regular discussions are done during the clinical postings following the concept of Integrated and Evidence Based Teaching. Students are given didactic clinical teaching sessions followed by clinical demonstration by the faculty. Routine group discussions and chairside discussions are also held. They are encouraged to observe major cases in the operation theatre under LA as well as GA. BDS students posted in the clinics are given preclinical exercises and clinical work on the patients under strict supervision of the faculty.
For the postgraduate students, basic sciences seminars are organised during the first six months of their admission. They are also given demonstrations and lab practice on simulated models for various types of inter-maxillary wiring and suturing techniques. In the second half of first year peripheral postings are scheduled.
From the second year onwards, they are encouraged to assist major and minor cases in the operation theatre and perform emergency hospital duties as per the schedule. Various value added, enrichment and interdisciplinary activities are organised to provide a holistic and comprehensive knowledge base to the students.
