Eligibility for Admission to the Master of Dental Surgery (M.D.S)

Eligibility Criteria

A candidate applying for admission to the MDS program must fulfill the following requirements:

  • 1. The candidate must possess a recognized Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree awarded by a university or institute in India.
  • 2. The candidate must be registered with the State Dental Council and hold a provisional or permanent registration.
  • 3. The candidate must have completed a one-year compulsory rotatory internship in an approved or recognized dental college.

Note for Foreign Nationals:

The Dental Council may grant temporary registration to foreign nationals for the duration of their post-graduate training, limited to the institution to which they are admitted. This registration is subject to:

  • Payment of the prescribed registration fee.
  • Proof of registration as a dental practitioner in their home country.
  • Recognition of their dental qualification by the corresponding state dental authority in their country.

Selection of Candidates

Admission to the MDS program shall be based on performance in a uniform NEET-PG (Dental) examination conducted each academic year. This exam is organized by the National Board of Examinations or any other authority designated by the Central Government. The overall supervision and control of NEET-PG (Dental) shall vest with the Dental Council of India.


Qualifying Criteria

The minimum qualifying percentiles for admission to MDS courses are as follows:

  • General Category: 50th Percentile
  • Persons with locomotory disability (lower limbs): 45th Percentile
  • SC / ST / OBC Categories: 40th Percentile

The percentile is determined based on the highest marks obtained in the All-India merit list of NEET-PG (Dental).


Reservation & Merit

  • Seat reservations shall be as per the prevailing State/UT laws.
  • Both All India and State-wise merit lists will be prepared based on NEET-PG (Dental) scores.
  • Candidates failing to secure the minimum qualifying percentile shall not be eligible for admission.
  • All admission processes must be completed within the statutory time schedule prescribed by the Dental Council of India.
