About Department

As such, it occupies a unique position in the health care community for both the dental and medical professions. Naturally, members of the dental profession must have a good knowledge of the pathogenesis, clinical features, treatment and prognosis for oral and paraoral diseases. Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is a highly visual subject, which is taught in III years of the undergraduate curriculum. The department is a highly specialized branch and many research works are done on a routine basis. Many significant advances have occurred in the areas of immunohistochemistry, molecular biology and genetics.

  • The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Post Graduate program at ITS-DHRCis a three-year full time program with 3 seats.
  • The Aim and Objective of this Program is to train a post graduate dental surgeon so as to ensure higher competence in both general and special pathology dealing with the nature of oral and maxillofacial diseases, their causes, processes and effects.

Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology

This branch of dentistry deals with the diagnosis and non-surgical management of diseases that are localized to the oral cavity or are oral manifestations of systemic diseases.

The phases of dental practice that are essentially concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of medically compromised patients are managed.

Clinical Research Activities

The college has a widely diverse patient population providing the post graduates with exposure to a large variety of clinical cases, thereby presenting them with unique clinico-pathologic research opportunities. Additionally, the Oral Pathology dept has more than 3000 archived cases available for study and research projects. Every resident chooses a topic for a 3-year post graduate thesis. It is expected that the postgraduate will complete the research and produce a publishable paper before completion of the program.

The broad range of research interests among the faculty in the Department of Oral Pathology and the campus of DJ College of Dental Sciences & Research offers post graduate students the opportunity to choose among a wide variety of research projects.

Faculties

The Department is well operational with equipment and other scientific instruments, which are needed to perform routine histopathological works?

The Department has mainly three wings

  • Clinical Oral Pathology
  • Oral Pathology Laboratory
  • Research Wing

The Clinical oral pathology is a clinical setup including dental chair units, autoclave and instruments for examining, diagnosing and performing biopsies. The department is well known for its oral cancer detection centre (OCDC), and other activities such as Anti-tobacco drive. The Laboratory equipment includes highly sophisticated equipment like automatic tissue processor, fully automatic microtome, automatic furnace, slide warming table, to name a few. The department has a sufficient number of monocular, binocular and trinocular research microscopes required for the undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

The research wing is equipped with microscopes with photomicrography, projection microscopes, image analysis software, digital photographic camera and digital electronic balance and so on. The number of researches are being conducted in the department.

Department Overview

The didactic curriculum in oral and maxillofacial pathology focuses on surgical application of the basic biomedical sciences. The lecture series in oral and maxillofacial pathology occurs as part of the dental Specialties course. The students are expected to make a record file as well as projects along with seminar presentations. An introduction to all the diseases of oral cavity including developmental disorders, infections, tumors, dentoalveolar pathologies is taught to the students in the form of didactic lectures and through case discussions.

  • An oral pathologist is expected to perform routine histopathological evaluation of specimens relating to oral and perioral tissues, to carry out routine diagnostic procedures including hematological, cytological, microbiological, Immunological and ultra structural investigations.
  • He/she is expected to have an understanding of current research methodology, collection and interpretation of data, ability to carry out research projects on clinical and or epidemiological aspects, a working knowledge on current databases, automated data retrieval systems, referencing and skill in writing scientific papers.

Undergraduate Program

The mission of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is to train undergraduate students to advance current knowledge in the field, to encourage the discovery of improved therapies and to serve the public by providing quality care.

Post Graduate Program

Oral Pathology is that branch of dentistry concerned with the scientific study of the causes and effects of oral disease. Oral Pathology is a unit within ITS-DHRC and has responsibilities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and diagnostic head and neck reporting service. The dept is well equipped with a Research Microscope, Immunohistochemistry lab, Microbiology lab, Histopathology & Cytology lab. The Departmental library with wide array of books on subject & related topics. E –library has more than 170 journals.
